Everyday I’m working with business owners helping them take their business’s to the
next level. There are times when some clients will come into a session completely flat. They’ve done absolutely nothing since our last session…which is hard to do because after each session my clients will walk away with clear action steps to take during the time between meetings.
They’re down in the dumps, they’re unmotivated because nothings moving forward and they’re often looking for an “excuse” as to why things aren’t going as well as they hoped.
Does any of this sound familiar? Does this sound like anything you have done (or not done) lately?
Well, let’s get real for a minute. We all have these moments…times when we just don’t feel like taking action and we’re totally unmotivated. This can be due to any number of factors; not getting enough sleep, not eating healthy, losing out on one particular piece of new business, relationship issues, health issues. This list goes on and on and it simply demonstrates that NO one is exempt from the challenges of life.
Since I too am not immune to getting in a funk like this, I’ve taken the time and effort to create 4 solid steps that help me when I get into one of these “down cycles” and I want to share those with you today.
1 – Rise Above It!
Take a deep breath and a step back to gather yourself and your thoughts. When we get hit with the “unmotivated” bug we can turn reactive and make rash decisions without giving things the proper thought. Try to mentally remove yourself from the situation, gain some overall perspective, then decide on which direction to move.
2 – Get Happy!
When you’re in a funk, the best thing to do to turn it around is to do something that will make you happy! Grab a green juice, get some sun if you can, get a massage, head out to a movie or go enjoy your favorite restaurant. Immerse yourself in things you love and reflect during that time on how you’re feeling.
3 – It Will Pass!
“Time heals all wounds” said someone much smarter than me…but it’s true! However, we also don’t want to lie in bed for a week gobbling down snacks and watching reruns of old sit-coms. Give yourself a break, and give yourself some time to get out of your funk knowing that it will eventually pass.
4 – You’re still here – and it’s still your choice!
If you’re still breathing then you’ve got the control to choose how you feel. Sounds too easy to be true…and, well, it is! It’s up to you how long you want to dwell on that lost business opportunity or that not-so-pleasant phone call you had to take. Reset your mind, focus on what’s important to you and start working in the things you need to do to get MORE of what you want!
What it boils down to is that you’re always in the driver’s seat. And if you know someone who’s been a bit flat lately, be sure to share this with them. Of course, you’ll want to be careful how you do it. Emailing someone to say “it’s time to get happy!” might not go over very well. Perhaps lead with “Hey, I read something that resonated with me and I thought I’d share it.”
