How To Reinvent Yourself

I’ve been working with an awesome client over the last few months that is a senior publicist for an agency but has a burning desire to be a Caterer.  She loves planning and cooking for parties and fun functions (not the boring types).  She is also fantastic with people!

Working with this client has been a pure joy as at each of our sessions together I can see her move toward her dream and further away from her ‘just a job’ existence. In our last session she told me how she still feels more like a publicist rather than a caterer although she is getting runs on the board with her catering business.

She is a classic example of the people I work with who find that they are merely surviving day to day in their personal and business life and they’re tired of it.  They want to make a change, they want to reinvent themselves, they want to THRIVE instead of simply surviving the day!

She wants to reinvent herself – from publicist to caterer and she’s not the first person that I’ve worked with that is searching for a magic wand to swing and POOF…now you’ve got a new career!

I hate to be the one to break it to you…but that magic wand just doesn’t exist.  You see, the reinvention starts and ends with YOU.  It doesn’t matter if you’re making a living waiting tables or pouring drinks at a bar.  At the end of the day what you SAY you are is who you actually are.  If you want to make that change, if you want to reinvent yourself, start by following the 3 tips that I gave to my client…

  • Say it!

Tell people that you’re what you want to be!  When you meet someone at a bar or telling friends of friends what you do, tell them that you are what you are trying to reinvent yourself into. In her case, the fact that she’s a publicist can come out later but first and foremost she needs to tell them she’s a caterer. Language is so important so start using the words that encompass who you really are.

  • Write it!

Write it down everywhere!  If you don’t, how is anyone going to know?  Write it on your business cards, your LinkedIn profile, your Facebook profile, your email signature, etc.  Are you telling people what you are working to be on all of these or simply telling people what you do today?  If not, what are you waiting for?

  • Be it

Sounds simple…but eventually you have to start “being” what you want to be!  In my client’s situation she needs to be writing articles about creating the perfect canapés for a 40th birthday or the best dessert for a group of 20 people.  If you don’t have your own blog…get started! Also look at where on the web you can share your knowledge. You could do a guest post on another blog, hold a webinar, create a podcast…your options and outlets are nearly unlimited. Step into the shoes you want to wear and show the world that you are the best at it.

There you have it!  It’s no more challenging than that so the time is NOW for you to go off and reinvent yourself!

Have you had a time when you needed to reinvent yourself? We would love to hear from you in the comments below about what has worked and what has NOT worked for you so we can share your tips and hints with others.

P.S. If you know someone that’s going through something similar at the moment, why don’t you forward this blog to them?! It’s free and could really make a huge impact on their life.
