The best thing you can do for your business

20080404-expertMy first day with The Harry M Miller Group (HMMG) as an Agent…excitement, nervousness, but more important a most amazing opportunity! I was 21 years old and my job was to manage the Big Brother Housemates (yes…the housemates had an agent!).

For any up-and-coming agent, there is no better training ground. I had the responsibility for scheduling all of their appearances, negotiating their contracts, managing their expectations (a full time job by itself!) and pitching ideas to secure endorsement deals, appearance engagements, radio hosting gigs, etc., etc..

Throughout the 5 years I spent working as a Senior Agent at HMMG, I had the privilege of working with some Australia’s most beloved media personalities and experts in their field including Ita Buttrose, Ryan Fitzgerald, Peter Morrissey, Gai Waterhouse, Zoe Bingley-Pullin and Collette Dinnigan.

I had the chance during this time to do a number of deals across licensing, publishing, television, speaking and endorsements and was responsible for increasing the profiles of my clients while making sure to bring in the bucks!

So…it’s no surprise that a large chunk of my clients are now made up of super-talented business owners who want to position themselves as an authority figure in their particular niche. Honestly, it’s the best thing they can do for their business!

Developing into an Expert requires more than simple book knowledge. Think about it…how many people are doing exactly what you’re doing in your particular industry who share a similar knowledge base? If your answer is “a lot” then how exactly do you plan to stand above the crowd? How do you plan on being the voice people turn to when they need an expert on a topic when there are so many out there with the same “knowledge”?

That is the topic of this week’s blog. I want to share with you a few ideas to get you to that point…to share with you some of the things you could be doing today to make sure you remain top-of-mind with potential clients and become their “go-to” person. I want to help you build the awareness others have of you while at the same time help you build your credibility and authority status!

Create Connections
Are you as engaged as you could be with the media who write, blog and speak on your industry? Do you know who these voices are? More important, do they know who YOU are? If you’re not connected in with the “movers and shakers” of your industry…the time to get started is now!

Put it into WORDS
Writing is a great way to get your message out there. It lets you demonstrate to your market that you know your stuff and can help them! You might have seen over the last 2 weeks that my work has been featured in The Huffington Post, Addicted 2 Success and Under30CEO. Start getting your words down on paper and out to the networks that will help build your authority status!

Say it LOUD
If you want to be known as an expert in your field…don’t keep your knowledge and experience to yourself. Do NOT be afraid to speak! Where do your clients go to receive information and get advice? Now…why aren’t you speaking/presenting at these places? Is there a networking, social or industry event that you might be able to speak at? If so…start developing those relationships and get on the schedule!

Show it
Typically your website will be the first place people begin learning about who you are, what you know and what you can do for them. But…do you suffer from “website shame?” How are you showcasing your talents as a leader in your field? Look at your website and pretend you’ve never heard of you and ask yourself how impressed (or UN-impressed) you are after reading what you have on your website. How do your testimonials look? Do you have logos of clients you’ve worked with in the past on display? In short, make sure that you put your best foot forward with your site. If you can’t get that right…how will you ever be considered an expert?

Being considered an authority figure in your industry will be crucial to your current and ongoing success. Take the time and put forth the effort to become a leader in your field…unless of course you’re satisfied with being part of the herd. By setting yourself apart you will position your business in such a way that clients will be seeking YOU out…not the other way around!
